About the NP273 Transfer Case

The NP273 transfer case was manufactured by both New Venture Gear and New Process. This model is chain driven. The NP273 is electrical shift. The NP273 was used in Dodge Ram Diesel 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500. Ford used the NP273 in the Excursion, Ford F250, F350, F450 and F550 pickups. This unit was utilized beginning in 1999.

The NP273 was manufactured with left side drop output and has a low gear ratio of 2.72 to 1. This unit has combination of 2 high, 4 high, 4wd low and neutral. The units are provided with various input front splines and some applications outputs utilize a rear slip yokes.

Potential problems with the NP273 Transfer Case

This unit can have issues with premature case failure caused lack of lubricant reaching the range hub and range fork. When rebuilding you want to check for a hole in the main shaft that will provide the necessary lubrication, This is corrected with the late model main shaft..
