Transfer Cases are tested before leaving the factory. This transfer case was manufactured by New Process. This model is a chain driven electric shift and part time transfer case. The output is on the driver-side with center rear output. This unit has been utilized in Chevrolet and GMC 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks & Suburban’s from 2001-Up. There are three different versions of this unit the light duty “LD” , heavy duty “HD” and the extra heavy duty unit “XHD”. The 263XHD unit is supplied with most diesel versions, the HD version has a 6 pinion planet and utilizes a 1.5″ wide chain.
The NP263 has 2.72:1 ratio, and has a magnesium case has either 4WD full-time, neutral and low 4WD, 2WD high and 4WD high. These units have different input spline counts: 27 splines in the NP263, 32 splines in the NP263 and 29 input splines in the NP263XHD.
This unit has a couple of engineering design problems, the oil pump can wear a hole in the rear case half, we recommend as part of your preventative maintenance program to install our machined aluminum case protector to save major repairs. A better option may be to install an upgraded rear case, see above. The second problem is thought to be caused by heat build up, failure of the shift forks causing the plastic pads to melt and damage the range shift hub and sometimes cause shaft damage. Recommended fluid is Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF.

This information tag is located on rear of transfer case near where the driveshaft exits. The NP263 can be followed by and “HD” or “XHD”

Note:
# 849 – There are two different designs to the range fork for the NV263 and the NV263XHD , the early fork has three removable pads. The late fork has 2 U- shaped pads and requires the updated range hub with the fork slot width of .368.
The Early fork with 3 pads is no longer available so if anything other than the pads are damaged it will require the purchase of the updated range fork NV43681, updated range hub NV43682 and 2 of the updated fork pads NV37284
The NV261 units use the NP17833 range fork
