The NP208 is an aluminum case 2 speed chain driven transfer case with a 2.62:1 reduction in low and 1:1in high range and utilizes a planetary gear low range. It was used in a variety of applications from 1980-1987 in Dodge Ramcharge and Pickup trucks, the Dodge units have 23 splines. Ford used 31 splines in 1981-1986 Broncos, F250 and F350 pickup trucks. GM used this transfer case in Pickups and Suburbans between 1981 and 1986 typically behind automatics with 27 splines. Cherokees and J trucks used this unit between 1980 to 1988 and called it the Command Trac.

The NP208 was manufactured with manual shift, it is a replacement unit for the earlier units, it is a part time case, the front driveshaft will not receive power when in 2WD. The transfer case is, chain driven, 2.62:1 ratio reduction in low and 1:1 in high range, and a manual shift.
