Transfer Case Problem 1999 Ford Expedition

I have a 1999 Ford Expedition with the 5.4L automatic transmission 4WD.Question:  This '99 Expedition is not  running at the moment. Customer claims there was a loud noise in the transmission or rear end. The rear end is perfect, oil was clean, looked good. However, rear drive shaft turns hard and about three times harder to turn in forward direction than in reverse, but there are no noises, nothing sounds or feels like a bad bearing when turning the driveshaft by hand. How can I tell if the transfer case is defective without taking it apart?Answer:   We believe that the Expedition has a BW4406 transfer case. We would suggest that you drain the oil in the transfer case, damage is usually shown by particles in the fluid. One possible thing that would prohibit movement would be a broken or worn out fork no allowing the gear engagement.Let us know what you find we can provide the parts you need. Give Scott a call at 888-824-2012 if you need more technical help.  You can see the other parts that we can supply for the BW4406.
