Clunking Sound NP233 Blazer 1996

I have a Blazer 1996 with 4.3L 4WD.

Question:  I have a question I REALLY hope you can help me out with, I have a 96 Chevy s10 blazer 4wd, It has the np233 transfer case. There is slack in the drive shaft so me and my dad checked it thinking u joints but when you grab the drive shaft and shake it the clanking sounds like its coming from the transfer case or transmission? Dad is thinking transfer case any thoughts?

Answer:  We would suggest you start by checking the fluid level and condition of the transfer case and rear differentials fluids, drain and inspect.Which shaft are you turning to produce this noise, front or rear. Worn spider/side gears in the differential can also produce this problem. You should be able to tell a lot by the fluid level and condition of the fluids, look for chunks, pieces and sliver nuggets. If the transfer case is sloppy or the culprit we recommend the following parts:

  • NP233 16mm wide input bearing rebuild kit our part number TRSBK230 your cost $70.00

  • Chain 1.25 inch wide 31 links part number TRSHV022 your cost $96.00.
